Swan of Grace + Have a Happy Weekend!

While in Leamington Spa, England a couple of weeks ago, I went for a walk in Jephson Gardens and came across someone feeding ducks and swans bread. Needless to say the swans fought a little over it, but they seemed to enjoy it.
"Hello, I'm a Scotsman!", said the man... "I enjoy feeding swans.

There were loads of waterfowl to see and they looked quite hungry.

I've heard that feeding ducks bread is bad, but one of my earliest memories as a kid was feeding the ducks at our local pond, and that helped formed my love for wildlife.

What about you?

My lovelies, hope you have a wonderful weekend! xx

I love swans! They're so beautiful and graceful. And yes, I do love to feed the ducks as well. I also like to feed pigeons. I know I shouldn't, but I do it anyway. Hey, they need to eat too, don't they?

Have a beautiful weekend filled with sunshine and love, my dearest Betty!

Hugs,
Nevine

Hello Betty:

They are lovely to watch. I used to live on the west coast of Sweden ansd often walked alonng the sea cliffs and watched the swans swimming not so far from shore.

My last experience with swans was a couple sitting at the edge of the river that runs through town with several babies. My wife & I paused our bike ride to watch a wee bit.

They can be aggressive, but I imagine they knew the kind Scotsman with the bread and were not about to bite the hand that feeds them.

Nice pictures.

Kind regards,
Mike

so beautiful. the last time I went to jungle gardens, i was feeding the flamingo's the food that we can buy there and the black swan waddled up. his beak looked a little fearsome, so I carefully held my palm out for him to pick up the food. i laughed out loud because the beak tickled like crazy, he kind of turned it sideways and grazed.

Swans are so beautiful and graceful, ducks also as they glide along the water, we being unaware of those little webbed feet paddling underneath. I have to go to a large park to see them but I have many other water birds who frequent the creeks and river where I live.
These are lovely photos dear Betty, have a lovely weekend.

I wonder where do they go, when the
water is frozen and ice in winter...
Did you ever think about?

Have a lovely weekend also,

Lovely photos, Betty. Swans sure are graceful animals.

I'm one of those who are against feeding the water fowl. We used to do it all the time.. even specifically bought high grain breads because we figured it was better for them but then we learned that it's really bad for their system. It bogs them down, fills their belly and makes them lazy about looking for the real food that they need to stay healthy.

It also makes them dependent on handouts, malnourished and less aggressive about finding their own food sources or even leaving the pond to migrate in the fall.

Sometimes, in winter, if the pond is frozen and they didn't migrate like they should, a rare handout of cracked corn, halved grapes, thawed frozen peas or duck pellets from a specialize store should get them through more healthfully.

I know that you and everyone else who feeds them have nothing but good intentions for them but bread truly is all sorts of bad for them.

Great to swan about and see folk feed them.

Yea, not really good to feed birds bread as it swells up in their bellies. But... having said that, it has been a way many have grown fond of wildlife. Including self. Nice shots of the swans.

Your photos are gorgeous and yes I feel the ducks bread too. Great memories doing it too. sandie

i know in some ponds, if lots of folks feed bread, any uneaten portions can rot and foul the water, causing disease, etc. not sure. i do throw some bread and crackers on occasion into our pond - not for ducks but for the fish and turtles. :)

Unknown said...

We've always thrown bread for our ducks and swans. Now we keep corn around for the winter geese that have shown up.

These are lovely pictures

Happy weekend!

You've gotten some wonderful pictures of the swans and ducks. A couple of the swans looked as if they were posing just for you. We don't feed bread to ducks (no swans around here), but many people do.

hilary, glad i read this! i guess i always figured that bread wasn't the best thing to feed any bird but i never knew it was quite that harmful.

thanks for passing along the word:)

I WANT SWANS!! That is to say, I want to take pictures of swans. We don't usually see them in our local ponds, but I did see a couple on some private property about 40 minutes away. (sigh) You're so lucky to have seen (and photographed) these graceful beauties.

Have a blessed weekend, Betty. :-)

Swans are beautiful, but I heard they can be quite mean! I like to watch the geese, but I once was attacked by them when I was feeding them! We are on the road all weekend, making our way towards AZ.

Thank you for your comments on my blog about my photos...I live on a pond and love the waterfowl. Right now I put out cracked corn and/or game bird pellets to give them a boost before the pond freezes. It's true that bread swells and can clog their crops (throat) although they love it. Beautiful photos!!! ..Michelle

Such graceful creatures swans are, although they're quite adept (and powerful) in defending their young. I especially liked that 3rd shot - great perspective with the droplets.

Hope your week is going well, Betty.
