When I was in Plymouth, UK almost a month ago, I went on a walk around town. This particular day I set out later than usual.
As I turned around to come back home dusk began falling and the dark settled in more quickly than I expected. The familiar shapes of houses, and the street lighting along the road became transformed by shadow into objects I've never seen before. I thought to myself, I may have strayed into the bad end of town...oh, that's really, really, really scary. But luckily the house where I stayed was too close to a busy road so the best thing to do was to hasten home.
Everything looks so different in the dusk. The scenery becomes more profound, charming and enchanting.
Everything took on a spooky aspect against the setting sun and dimming light.
It was purely magical.
Yes, I did have a scary experience, but I was lucky enough to take some good (to my mind) photos. That walk at dusk certainly paid off! xx

Everything looks so surreal. My art teacher will only take photos before 8:00 AM and after 5:00 PM. He's a nut about lighting. He would love yours.

What an interesting array of photos! I like the effects you've captured in your night photos.
Super great pictures,
Greetings Crissi
The night-shots are not easy to photograph without a tripod
interesting Betty, although it looks like you may have strayed into Devonport ie. the bad end of town.
light and dark can really change everything...amazing photos dear friend :)
So pretty! And so different from the normal daytime shots usually posted on sites.
I love sunsets and dusk.
That IS spooky, but looks like an adventure!
Awesome pics Betty and some of them are quite spooky!
I love dusk and these are such beautiful shots!!!
Τι ωραίες φωτογραφίες!!
καλησπέρα!!
Wonderful pictures my friend but I do hope you weren't out ALONE after dark in that place - spooky is right! HA! xoxoxo
There is something eerily gothic about these photos. I love it! :)
Thank you for your visit and wonderful comments on my blog!
Interesting photos of this neighborhood!
It truly is an entirely different world at night. I like the night and always have...
Nice pics Betty!
I like these night shots are well framed and the moonlight is spectacular! The night knows everything! saludo
Oh, those pictures are a bit spooky, and I wouldn't like to be in there. But, they are beautiful photos.
spooky they are, and i would not want to be walking in any of these photos alone or even with someone, but they make great photos, pretty lights. now you can add a witch here and a ghost there and be ready for All Hallows Eve.
haha, trac! truth be told...i was all alone in that place, but the house where i was staying in was too close to a busy road when darkness fell over there!
very spooky indeed! :)
Bonitas tomas nocturnas, saludos...
Great shots, Betty, and, yes, it does look spooky! But sometimes that's part of the fun!

I'm sorry you had a scary experience in the dusk and dark, but you certainly got some beautiful pictures.
Yes, night time shots can be magical and you've captured magic here - even though it was a little spooky.
Nice shots, Betty ! I hope your week is less spooky. ;-)
Back in '81, I saw An American Werewolf in London. There are lingering emotions from that movie that your photos stirred up. I hope these triggers don't impede tonight's sleep. (shiver)
It seems a nice place to live
It seems a nice place to live
?kinda? spooky?
Night seems to come alive, and movement seems everywhere.
Wonderful post and pics, and pleased you were safe.
I like it but it is very hard to take night pictures.
Greetings,
Filip
Everything looks differently depending on the light you have .. Play of light and shadow, the mystery of the night.
A good number of good pictures acompañda.
Greetings .-
Oooooh, that one looks like a spooky castle. I love them all!

Those pictures really are magical Betty. You're a brave woman for stopping to take them. I especially like the 5th and 6th ones.
Hugs to you,

you are a professional photographer: D
q like your work
Wonderful shots Betty! They do have a little spookiness to them.
That could have been a dangerous situation Betty. Please be careful! :) xoxo
It is a drastic change when the sun goes down. If we're out late the familiar can become strange.
The moon and street lights combine to make some spooky scenes.
Looks like the place is deserted..
I'd feel spookiness too if i was there alone..
lucky you had your cam toplay with to forget the feeling.
Tienes toda la razón, la noche es muy especial para hacer fotos, y las fotografías nocturnas encierran esa mezcla perfecta de belleza y misterio. Tu Post, con estas magníficas fotografías, así lo demuestra.
Me gusta tu blog, te sigo

Fun gloomy shots :-)
What an awesome adventure!
Very cool photos Betty! I think some of them would make terrific book jacket photos. You have a great eye!
I love these pictures!!
I would love to go there and take some night photos of that place.
It looks really spooky!
The darkness does indeed bring on an unsettled feeling. All those shadows...
Very cool nighttime shots! They do look kind of spooky!
What great images and so seasonal. I think some of these would make great book covers, so atmospheric, I love them.
I like the moon with the silhouette of the stacks.
-siids, you're too kind!
thanks!!
These are wonderful images Betty!
I cannot tell you the number of times I've set out on a walk, planning to be back well before dark, and then going off here and there, suddenly realizing it's completely dark, and I REALLY don't want to be where I've ended up! :-)
Thank you so much for sharing these at The Creative Exchange this week.
Have a great day!
lisa.
I am surprised to realize I haven't done this for a while, but I rather like walking after nightfall whether in a city or around a quiet small town; or even in the country, or the woods and wilds, when there is a smooth road or trail to walk.
spooky indeed. my fave has to be the last one.
Lovely night shots and, yes, some do look a bit spooky!
Hello! Very beautiful photos!
First off, glad you made it home okay. You just never know nowadays, right?
I agree! Spooky shots!
That moon is totally eerie!
Awesome photos. You remind me of my time over there and have me missing it!
I love these shots - it's very true that dusk makes things look very different. I've been a couple of places I shouldn't, but being a somewhat oversized guy I just stand up straight and I've been lucky so far!
What amazing shots! I agree - in the dark, everything looks different and spookier.

Betty, thanks for stopping by DeepRootsAtHome.com I love your photos of the moon and the clouds. I too am working at my photography, but at 60, I am facing a big learning curve :) We were in England for 2 weeks before we went to Switzerland. Do you live in the UK? I wrote a post about Oxford last week!! We loved it there.
Blessings!
