Sliced bread is turning 91 this year! The first commercial pre-sliced loaves of bread were produced on July 28, 1928 in Chillicothe, Missouri, using a machine - the world's first slicing machine - invented by Otto Frederick Rohwedder of Davenport, a jeweler from Missouri.
Rohwedder also came up with a way to keep pre-cut bread fresh. He added a feature to the Bread-Slicer machine that wrapped the loaf in a wax paper after slicing. It was an instant success!
Almost everyone has heard the phrase "the greatest thing since sliced bread". It's been said that "the phrase is the ultimate depiction of innovating achievement and American know-how."
Hope you have a wonderful weekend! xx
