Are There "Ugly" Women?

This photo was taken at a competition. The competition was
between nine women who had to have makeovers.
They had every possible beauty treatment available to them
                                        over a period of time.
Look at the before and after photos. Conclusion: There are no
"ugly" women, only poor women. If we had the money....
Seriously, at this point I feel it is important to say that
"Ugliness" is usually on the inside, and has the face
of jealousy, malice, and not on the outside.

I was at the library yesterday and went ahead and picked up
this book. The book: Uglies Trilogy, (Uglies, Pretties,
Specials) and Extras by Scott Westerfeld.
I am not sure if I'll get through all of it, but I did read the first
chapter, and found the info eye-opening.
I liked the idea of this bizarre and yet quite likely utopia, so
I went reading, and I think the story got better as it developed.
I was especially interested in the main character's personal
development- from a cheeky but not very opinionated "ugly"
she became a liberated free-willed young woman.
The book is recommended for anyone who likes a good,
                                           thoughtful read. xx

I don't think there are ugly women..ugly actions, but not ugly women.

Amazing! I wouldn't have been able to tell who was who if there weren't any lines!!

Also ... think I might pick up that book if I can find it ... I love reading books other people have recommended! :)

Money can do amazing things. People don't want to believe that, but it's true.

It's a matter of individual opinion, but when two people are alone in the dark, everything can be beautiful.

Conversely, beautiful people can have ugly personalities.

Which also brings us back to "Beauty" meaning a lot of different things to different people.
Most of these women were probably beautiful on the inside, and only needed a bit of self-confidence to bring it out.
I couldn't help but notice that they all have long hair, and are all sun-tanned. Does that mean that short-haired, pale skinned women are ugly?
I bet this was some man's idea!

I remember I received a version of this through email... and in it they had added pictures of Susan Boyle before and after pictures just to prove the same point... ..

so sad..even the definition of 'ugly' is so shallow.

Wow, that make-over photo is amazing! Are we talking cosmetic surgery and all? I want to know how many had boob jobs.

You are absolutely right! There are quite a few complete makeover shows on at the moment, the sad part is everyone look the same after the makeover lol

Few years ago.. when we had TV and were watching some beach scene my DH commented how beautiful those women were ... and I said they could afford it. Surprised to see you have said something similar over here after a long gap in time..
Your blog is wonderful Betty.. Love you.

Unfortunately, I've had acquaintance with "ugliness" in women but the "ugliness" is usually on the inside and took the form of bullying, betrayal, jealousy, whining, etc...

Like the Hotflash Queen said, there are not ugly women but ugly actions!

My opinion: I am with my bloggy- friend, Polly. And I agree with her 100 per cent!

I think that what is thought to be beautiful changes from person to person.I don't judge people by their appearance.Instead,I believe that we should concentrate to other people' personality.

Nothing against the fact that we all want to "improve" in life, if possible (that is why I do yoga every day!) but everything against the evil of Barbie Forever... Let us feed our souls more and we'll be beautiful forever!

I've seen that photo some time ago, and frankly, what I found shocking about it was the fact, that they all look alike: big boobs, white teeth and long hair. They are even made up rather similarly. Is that the definition of beauty in today's America? Or why were they put through expensive operations and other treatments to look the same? If yes, then how sad that everybody has to be fitted into the mould to be considered beautiful....

The book sounds great, I think I need to take a peek. :)

I believe it...if we all had money we would all look like a million bucks;)

beauty lies in the eyes of beholder :
for me the concept of beauty isn't makeup and dashboard abs. the innocence and the glow you have in your soul actually reflects in your eyes that's what make you beautiful!

once you communicate with another person .. so your inner beauty impresses the mind of the so called "beholder" and that's where you score.

I've many friends who wear makeup .. trust me when their makeup is gone.. they are ugly for others but still beautiful for me..

My take? Everyone is beautiful. the universe doesn't make ugly things. People do by classifing other things ugly :)

It maybe cliched, but beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. I've watched a couple makeover programs and quite often I think they looked better before they were glammed up.

You know what? Unfortunately there is such a thing as ugly women-or people in general. Simply because we include them in impossible comparisons. Sure, with some permanent make-up, hair extensions, implants of God-knows-what, and we'd all look like Stepford wives. Great post!

And why do only ugly woman wear glasses... pisses me off.

Not impressed lets see what they could do on their own like the rest of us.. or me at least.

Eye opener for sure.

I love this post, Betty! And I don't believe in ugly women. Women are beautiful creatures... except for the witches, and that's witches with a capital "B"! Women who are mean are ugly... not because they're physically ugly... but because all that blackness inside them makes them look like they hate life and hate themselves... and they do. A woman who hates herself can never smile with her eyes.

Boy, do I agree with you! ANYONE can look beautiful if they've got the money to fork over!

I like the idea of this book you've recommended. Confidence, no matter what your dress size or nose length, is very, VERY sexy indeed!

Super post! Personally I think that all of us are beautiful in our own way and that the worst thing a woman or man can do is try to live up to the rigid stereotypes the beauty industry has imposed on society. I don't want to live in a world of "Stepford Wives" and neither should anyone else. It's variety that makes life interesting. And the most beautiful thing a woman has is not something you can throw a sash on and parade in front of people...it's her personality and character.

Some of the most beautiful women I know are those that know how to make a dollar stretch, although money always makes it easier. I have found for many women (but not all) it is a matter of caring about yourself enough to take pride in the way you present yourself.

Wonderful and insightful post, Betty.

TODAY IN 2010 NO WOMEN SHOULD BE UGLY IN ANY AGE.DONT PIISS OFF LADYS,THATS THE TRUTH.IF U DONT LIKE WHAT U SEE IN THE MIRROR EVERY DAY,CHANGE IT.TRY TO BE BEAUTIFUL FOR YOURSELF.5 MINUTES IS ENOUGH TO GET RID OF YOUR GLASSES AND WITH DIET AND WORKOUT YOULL GAIN A GREAT BODY,AND LEAVE THE REST TO THE PLASTIC SURGEON, BECAUSE THE WORD (UGLY) EXCISTS IN ALL DICTIONARIES. THANK YOU MY SWEET BETTY FOR THE ARTICLE

I beg! No insist to differ. If you want to see an ugly woman Google "jocelyn wildenstein." And if you want to see beautiful women with no make-up or enhancements or fashion style, google "women's hockey olympic medal ceremony"
Simple beauty with not so much as a single eye-liner! And all in full hockey gear with their hair tied back.

The ugliest women are the ones with mean actions...I do agree

I don't think there are ugly people, but some are less physically attractive than others....just being honest. This is why we buy fashion magazine and ogle celebrities. money can make you look pretty on the outside, but it can't do anything if you don't feel it inside.

money can also make a less attractive person seem appealing...think Donald Trump. ha ha!

Sonya Ann said...

Well said! I would definitely be considered ugly, we are so broke!

It is difficult to find natural beauty in our times... When the lifting and beauty parlors have not made a good job.. there is allways the photoshop to complete it...
..But i must agree with some of your readers.. Beauty lies in the eyes of those who can appreciate it..
